Disabled Children is a Non Governmental Organisation, sponsored by the community, and is dedicated to teaching/training blind and disabled young people about computers and computer software, such as Microsoft Office Suite and related software programs. Action trains students from basic computer skills to the more advanced software programs, with the goal of training them to the required level needed to write the Microsoft Accredited examinations and with the assistance of ACTION these young people have the potential to obtain gainful employment. Action is the only NGO in South Africa to provide a win, win and win situation. In return for Corporate Social Investment from the South African business community, Action provide business win by having a pool of competent, trained blind / disabled people for any level of employment, Equity Employment targets for disabled staff are 2 %. Action does not charge our sponsors finder or placement fees. Blind or disabled people win by being on a career path with a future and not having to rely on a Government Grant which is barely above the United Nations Poverty Level (1.00 / day), ie R870.00 per month and finally all the citizens of South Africa win with less strain on public funds ie blind / disabled people now self sufficient (once a blind / disabled person earns in excess of R 1 500.00 / month the person is no longer entitled to receive disablity benefits) and with 1.74 Million blind / disabled people in South Africa receiving Government funds of R 870.00 each / month there can be is a massive saving of public funds which can be utilised for health, public transport, housing or other shortfalls in our country. The Equity Employment Act is wonderful for those less fortunate than ourselves but ..... 63.33 % of our disabled community are visually impaired and 22.62 % are hearing impaired, Action \'s management has delt with placing people with challenges in employment since 2000, thus we feel the Equity Eemployment Act does not consider the scope of disabilities in South Africa, from a business point of view an employer want the best person for the job, when there is a choice between a person who battles to read or cannot read at all, a person who battles to communicate or cannot communicate at all with the majority of people and finally a person who has a mobility challenge alone the person with the mobility challenge is chosen for the job 9 out of 10 times, therefore 85.95 % of our disabled community are not benefiting very much from the Equity Employment Act. The nature of business today is such that the majority of positions Action receives requests to fill are in administration and couples with the challenges disabled people face when accessing public transport or the lack of public transport in industrial areas means 85.95 % of our disabled community are still marginalised. The tuition centre is seriously under-funded in terms of specialist tutors, equipment and adaptive software for blind and disabled people. Our key focus is ensuring blind and disabled young people obtain Microsoft Office Specialist Certificates. The MS Office Specialist is the best qualification to certify the learners as being competent in the MS Office products. Once our young blind and disabled learners attain an MS Office Specialist Certificate the learner moves onto more advanced training such as CRM (Customer Relations Management Systems) and call center training, with emphasis on out-bound Call Centers. ACTION has over 170 blind and disabled students registered for tuition, with the numbers growing daily. ACTION tutors over 20 young blind and disabled people free of charge on a daily basis. Over 35 students can be accommodated daily, but due to limited resources this is impossible at present. Computer and IT Training for senior school learners in many disabled schools was unavailable as late as 2002. A disastrous situation to have our future generation leaving school in the 21st century without IT knowledge. This problem was identified by the foresighted founders and thus ACTION was established and registered in 2002. Many of the blind and disabled youngsters enrolled with ACTION hail from rural areas and on a R780-00 Government Disability Grant, it is impossible for them to sustain themselves in areas where tuition is available, and even more of an impossibility to afford their education. Approximately 90% of disabled schools now offer computer and IT tuition to their blind and disabled learners. Unfortunately we now have a lost generation of blind and disabled youngsters without IT skills, who should be starting their working careers but are unable to do so due to their lack of skills coupled with the fact that the majority of blind and disabled people are rooted in poverty and unable to afford IT tuition. ACTION \'s accommodation center situated in Roodepoort, nick named The White House is severely over subscribed to the extent that a three bed roomed house designed for a family of four, houses twelve blind and disabled young people. The lounge area has been converted and serves as a bedroom resulting in there being no recreational area for our young residents. There is a waiting list of over twenty young blind and disabled people who require accommodation in order to take advantage of our free Computer and IT tuition and skills training and this is growing at a phenomenal rate. Project 2 - Matriculation / Blind and Disabled Young People. Project 3 - Accommodation Center. Project 4 - New Accommodation Center. Project 5 - Arts and Crafts Center for Blind and Disabled Young People. Project 6 - Arts and Crafts Retail Outlet. Project 7 - Action \'s Disabled Sports Team. Project 8 - Nkosi \'s Haven. (Carltonville) Project 1 - Computer Literacy for Blind and Disabled Young People. It is a fact that up until 2002 most disabled schools could not provide IT tuition for their scholars. Now in the 21st century we have a whole generation of blind and disabled people without IT skills (a lost generation). The government has legislated that every employer must ensure a 2% blind or disabled employee staff content. It is impossible for most blind or disabled people to take advantage of the new labour laws, in terms of people with disabilities, when blind and disabled people only receive a Government grant of R780-00 per month. Most families spend over R700-00 on a weeks grocery shopping, how could a blind or disabled person afford IT tuition, which on the open market is R2000-00 to R3000-00 for one week of tuition. ACTION was established in 2002 due to the foresighted members of ACTION who identified the problem of our lost generation (the majority of South Africa \'s 4.5 million people who are registered blind or disabled without IT skills). ACTION tutors any person registered blind or disabled free of charge, as well as supplying the young disabled person with their transport and a midday meal on the day of attending classes. ACTION is only able to provide this service, through your assistance. ACTION is a entirely private funded organisation, as we receive no Government funding or assistance what so ever. ACTION provides blind and disabled young people with the most up to date IT tuition, necessary to secure employment. ACTION provides young blind and disabled people with a Microsoft Office Specialist Certificate (MOSC) which is internationally recognised.&nbsp The MOSC encompasses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, Power Point and Internet Explorer. These are desktop products used by 95% of business today. ACTION \'s tuition is a highly specialised environment to ensure blind and disabled people achieve MOSC status. Our young blind and disabled learners are taught with specialist tutors and equipment. In order for ACTION to provide this highly technical and specialised tuition for those less fortunate than ourselves we need your assistance. ACTION can invest up to R15,000-00 for one blind or disabled persons tuition, in order to ensure those less fortunate than ourselves opportunities most of us have enjoyed. ACTION desperately needs your assistance. Please contribute to our MOSC tuition programme, as we are currently tutoring over 170 blind and disabled young people. Back to Top Project 2 - Matriculation / Blind and Disabled Young People. Many blind and disabled people are unable to take advantage of the new labour legislation in terms of people with disabilities due to the fact that many of blind and disabled people are not matriculated. In the past, sufficient funds were not allocated to ensure previously disadvantaged blind and disabled young people were able to receive the specialist tuition they require. South Africa is now in a position to achieve levels of service for blind and disabled people comparable with first world countries and it is up to everybody to ensure those less fortunate than ourselves receive the qualifications necessary to compete in our modern times. ACTION is recognised as an ABET Learning Center by the Education Department and has began the mammoth task of ensuring all blind and disabled people have the opportunity of obtaining Matriculation, the first step on the road to a career. Please assist ACTION to extend our helping hand to every blind and disabled person desperate to play a role in society. ACTION urgently requires funds to employ Braille and specialist tutors as well as to purchase specialised equipment and material for the tuition of blind and disabled people. Back to Top Project 3 - Accommodation Center. ACTION provides free accommodation for young blind and disabled people from areas situated outside reasonable daily commuting, who attending our tuition courses. The accommodation is 300% over occupation and a 1000% oversubscribed. The specialist training Action provides is only available to any blind or disabled person in South Africa from ACTION. In order for ACTION to fulfill the needs of our blind and disabled community many more accommodation center such as the White House (the pet name for our accommodation center) are needed. We desperately need your assistance to create a comfortable environments, for young blind and disabled people who are eager to receive ACTION’s tuition in order to gain fulfilling employment. The White House has fifteen young blind and disabled people in residence, the house was designed for a family of four, bedrooms which should accommodate one or two people have five or six young people some in wheelchairs which makes it very difficult for our blind residents. One of ACTION’s priorities is to extend The White House, the cost of building in present times is very expensive and ACTION must extent the house by at least 60 m2. The cost of the extentions will be in the region of R200 000.00l, please assist ACTION to ensure a better living environment for our young blind and disabled residents. Back to Top Project 4 - New Accommodation Center. Accommodation for blind and disabled people in areas where amenities are convenient is very expensive. The demands placed on ACTION by the South African blind and disabled community necessitates additional accommodation. Properties in our area are very expensive and in order for ACTION to provide a similar facility as the White House, ACTION must raise funds in the region of R650,000-00, for the purchase of one additional property. The administration and renovations for accessibility and sustainment for the short to medium term are included. Back to Top Project 5 - Arts and Crafts Center for Blind and Disabled Young People. The formal employment sector is of such a competitive nature that many full-bodied individuals cannot gain employment. Those less fortunate than ourselves face an even greater hurdle in gaining employment. ACTION has achieved many successes in placing young blind and disabled people in corporate environments; ACTION recognizes the need to provideskills for young blind and disabled people in the informal sector. ACTION Arts and Crafts studio tutors young blind and disabled people in the craft of pottery, lampshade manufacture and ethnic craft, the Arts and Crafts Studio was established with the foresight that providing skills, which can be used in the formal sector, are not sufficient; we need to sharpen up a young blind and disabled persons opposite edge of their sword to fulfill a role in the informal sector. ACTION Arts and Crafts studio yearns for raw materials, new handcraft skills, assembly projects, plant and equipment, specialist skills training. All of the aforementioned comes at a huge expensive, please assist ACTION to provide young blind and disabled people with as many skills as possible to ensure them an income far better than R780-00 per month. Back to Top Project 6 - Arts and Crafts Retail Outlet. ACTION hand crafted products manufactured by our young blind and disabled people are extremely popular. The studio at ACTION has the facility to establish a retail outlet for our products, the retail outlet will enable ACTION to market more of the products made by our young people, intern it will enable ACTION to afford to train many more blind and disabled people in the art and craft center. Please assist ACTION by ordering our products on line and please contribute to the shop fitting for our retail outlet. Our retail outlet will sell products manufactured by the blind and disabled Schools ACTION is associated with as well as other blind and disabled organizations. Back to Top Project 7 - Actions Disabled Sports Team. ACTION encourages all of our young blind and disabled people to participate in blind and disabled sports. ACTION has achieved many successes in blind and disabled sports, notably ACTION introduced two young paraplegics to wheelchair rugby, who have now represented our National side in the Amakroko kroko team. ACTION sports initiative requires 110% commitment from our Staff and we are desperately in need of assistance for transport administration, sports kits, etc… Back to Top Project 8 - Nkosi \'s Haven. (Carltonville) ACTION extends itself into rural areas and discovered Nkosi \'s Haven on a field trip. Nkosi \'s Haven is a desperately under-funded home for severely disabled children. The situation is heart-wrenching and we respectfully request your assistance in our endeavor to make the lives of these children more bearable.
